Yaki Point, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

After waking up early on a cold April morning, I was somewhat disappointed to find that the dawn light at Yaki Point on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon was obscured by dense storm clouds on the horizon. However, one of the most important things I have learned is to never give up and keep on shooting. In fact, some of my best images were captured when others folded up their tripods and walked away. Soon, my patience was rewarded as rays of sun began filtering through the clouds, illuminating Wotans Throne and Vishnu Temple and making for a one-of-a kind photograph.

Please keep in mind that from December 1st to November 30th, the Yaki Point Road and Kaibab Trail Parking Lot are closed to private vehicles. One needs to board the earliest orange shuttle bus leaving at 6 AM from the Visitor Center in order to arrive at Yaki Point in time for sunrise.

"Stormy Morning at Yaki Point"

Technique: Single exposures utilizing a 3-stop Singh-Ray Daryl Benson reverse graduated ND filter and my favorite versatile wide to medium zoom lens (Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120 f/4G ED VR).
